An inquest into a shocking mass shooting in Plymouth has called for “root and branch reform” of firearms legislation in the United Kingdom. 22-year-old Jake Davison killed his mother, Maxine Davison, as well as Sophie and Lee Martyn, Kate Shepherd, and Stephen Washington in August 2021, before taking his own life.
Coroner Ian Arrow has stated that the current firearms laws are “in conflict with public safety” and has called for a comprehensive review and overhaul of the laws to prevent future tragedies.
The shootings have caused widespread shock and distress in the community. Simon Jones, a local resident, stated, “It’s a tragedy for the families involved, and it’s difficult to fathom how anyone could commit such heinous acts against innocent people.”
