This Sunday, Royal Marine Sam Hammond will attempt to shatter a Guinness World Record by running the London Marathon while carrying a refrigerator on his back. Mr. Hammond, who is 30 years old and stationed at RNAS Culdrose in Helston, hopes to complete the race in less than five hours and thirty minutes, breaking the current record of five hours and 49 minutes.
Mr. Hammond can carry his 57.9-pound (26.3-kilogram) refrigerator for miles and is confident that he can reach his goal. He attributes his preparation for the challenge to his military training, stating, “As a Royal Marine, you learn in basic training what the human body is truly capable of, and you realise you can achieve more than you ever imagined.”
Mr Hammond has created a fundraising page for the armed forces charity SSAFA, where he aims to raise more than £2,000 in donations. He stated, “I’m confident I’ll complete the race, but I don’t know how my body will react in the final six to eight miles. The longest distance I’ve ever run is 20 kilometres.
The challenge has been met with an outpouring of support from Mr. Hammond’s friends and family, but he admits to feeling “definitely nervous” about the extended challenge. Best of success to Mr. Hammond on Sunday, and we hope he breaks the record!
