North Attacks over the weekend may be linked to loyalist tensions

On the weekend of October 24, 2020, police in North Down reported multiple attacks involving gasoline and pipe bombs. A 62-year-old man was treated by paramedics on Sunday after two petrol bombs were thrown at his home in Newtownards’ Moyne Gardens. Although no injuries were reported, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service was called to put out the fire. The property suffered damage to the window sill, roof, and floor, as well as a parked car.

On Saturday, additional attacks occurred, including one in Newtownards’ Dicksonia Drive where a brick was thrown through a front window and the property’s front was severely damaged. A pipe bomb was thrown at a home on Bowtown Road, shattering a window and damaging the wall. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in either incident.

The final attack occurred on Bangor’s Skipperstone Road, where a petrol bomb was thrown at a residence. Several windows were broken and the property sustained scorch damage. Three people were able to escape the house without injury.

The police are currently investigating the connections between the attacks and have issued a witness call. In addition, they have suggested that there may be tensions within loyalty. Undetermined at this time are the individuals or groups responsible for the incidents.
