Eating disorders: “I created the podcast I wish I’d been able to listen to.”

Molly Smith, a 19-year-old presenter, has been diagnosed with anorexia since she was 14 years old. She hopes that her podcast, ‘The Weigh Up: Eating Disorder Diaries,’ will give a voice to those who may be experiencing similar situations and help dispel the stigma associated with eating disorders.

Molly Smith hopes to use her personal experience with anorexia to dispel common misconceptions about eating disorders. Molly, who is now 19 years old and was diagnosed with an eating disorder when she was 14 years old, hopes that her podcast, The Weigh Up: Eating Disorder Diaries, will help others in similar situations.

Molly explains that when she was ill, there was no one she could relate to, and the only people who spoke about eating disorders were professionals or medical experts. She hopes her podcast will give those battling anorexia and other eating disorders a voice.

Molly stated, “Many individuals experience weight loss as a side effect of their eating disorder, contrary to popular belief.”

The podcast also examines the effect on families and friends and includes episodes with Molly’s relatives. Molly wishes to emphasise that anorexia is a selfish illness, as well as how it affects the loved ones of those affected.

Molly’s podcast was created after she won the Rachael Bland New Podcast Award, which was established in 2019 in memory of Rachael Bland, a BBC presenter who passed away in 2018 from breast cancer. The award aims to provide a platform for new content creators, and winners are given the chance to develop their podcast concept with the BBC.

Molly remarked, “Rachael’s podcast was absolutely phenomenal; I learned so much from it. I am so inspired by her and her co-hosts’ work, and I sincerely hope that my podcast will reach the same level of community.”
