Today, the police watchdog referred to the Crown Prosecution Service the case of an unarmed black man, Chris Kaba, who was fatally shot by a police officer in Streatham, London (CPS).
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) commenced their investigation in July 2020, when the Metropolitan Police released a statement stating that Mr. Kaba had been shot on 3 July following reports of a man acting suspiciously.
Jonathan Green, Regional Director for London for the Independent Office for Police Conduct, stated, “We have reviewed eyewitness evidence and body-worn video from the officers involved. A detailed account from the officer who fired the fatal shot has also been considered. We have worked closely with Mr. Kaba’s family from the beginning, keeping them informed of our progress and involving them in our investigation.”
The IOPC found “insufficient evidence” to determine whether or not criminal offences were committed in relation to the shooting of Mr. Kaba. Therefore, they have decided to refer the case to the CPS in order to form their own opinion.
The CPS will now evaluate all of the evidence gathered by the IOPC during the investigation to determine whether the officer who shot Mr. Kaba should face criminal charges. This is anticipated to be a lengthy process, and it is unknown when a decision will be made.
Members of the community, as well as civil rights groups such as Black Lives Matter UK and Mr. Kaba’s supporters, have criticised this case strongly in public.
A spokesperson for Black Lives Matter UK stated, “We are profoundly saddened by Chris Kaba’s passing. In the pursuit of justice and accountability for Chris’s death, the referral of the case to the CPS is a positive development. We will continue to fight for Chris and all other victims of police brutality.”
Today is a significant day in this difficult case, as the police watchdog has referred to the Crown Prosecution Service the case of Chris Kaba, an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by a police officer in Streatham, London. With this referral, it is hoped that Mr. Kaba’s family will receive answers and justice, and that those responsible will be held accountable. In the interim, activists and members of the general public have expressed grief and outrage over Mr. Kaba’s death and will continue to fight for justice.
