This week, a 35-year-old man from Hackney pleaded guilty to assault and throwing coins onto the field during a match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur last month.
Joseph Watts appeared before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court and admitted to attacking Aaron Ramsdale, 24, of Arsenal after the north London derby on January 15. The final score was 2-0 in favour of Arsenal.
After the game, Ramsdale was kicked in the back, and Watts admitted to throwing four coins onto the field during the contest.
Despite increased security measures taken by both teams to ensure the safety of fans, the incident occurred. This included limiting the number of available tickets and performing temperature checks at the entrance.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, “We are grateful to everyone who assisted us in investigating and prosecuting this incident.”
Watts’s sentencing is scheduled for later this month. Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
This incident serves as a reminder of the significance of sports safety, especially during high-stakes contests. It is hoped that this incident will inform future security measures and encourage spectators to behave responsibly at sporting events.
